Minimum Qualifications

Three years of experience in one or a combination of the following:

1. Administrative services
2. Inspecting or enforcing compliance with agricultural laws, rules, or regulations
3. Inspection and testing of weighing and measuring devices

OR

A bachelor’s degree in forestry, an agricultural, biological, chemical, environmental, health, or physical science, or an information technology, mathematics, or business field.

Job Duties and Other Information

Job Duties:
The Veterinary Health Division is responsible for the prevention, control, and eradication of diseases in livestock and poultry under the direction of the Louisiana State Veterinarian. Supervision for this position is received from the Agriculture Specialist District Supervisor.

  • Identifies cattle, horses, swine, sheep, poultry, goats, cervids, and other exotics with official USDA identification for movement interstate and intrastate.

  • Works with State and Federal Veterinarian Officers to control and eradicate diseases within the state.

  • Issue quarantines for any exposed or positive animals according to the State Veterinarian's office.

  • Collect sample tissues, fill out paperwork, pack samples on ice, and mail them to the federal lab for the BSE program.

  • Record owners, addresses, back tags, ear tags, sexes, breeds, and brands of all animals offered for public sale, and upload all data collected to the server for record retention.

  • Inspect documentation required by the state of Louisiana on equine entering and residing within the state.

  • Collect samples and inspect feed mills, stores, and any other facilities that handle livestock or pet food.

  • Conduct stop orders and investigations under the supervision of the Feed Director.

Functional Requirements:

Climbing stairs and occasionally ladders

Sit for a long period of time at a workstation or in a vehicle for travel

Requires considerable walking over irregular ground and standing for long periods of time

Moderate light lifting, 30 pounds, with occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds


Environmental Factors:

May be required to wear appropriate safety protection

Exposed to grain dust, bad odors from farm animals, chemicals, fertilizers, and other agricultural materials

Excessive smoke, heat, humidity, cold, wet, and extreme dry conditions

Appointment Type:
  • Full-time- this position may be filled by probation or by promotion of a classified employee of the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry serving with permanent status.
  • Applicants who are not permanent employees of the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry will be required to serve a probationary period up to 24 months.
Career Progression: This position may be filled as an Agriculture Specialist 1, 2, or 3, depending on the level of experience of the selected applicant(s).
Compensation: The salary offered will be determined based on qualifications and experience.
